I know I probably sound like Michael Scott from "The Office," but this is a serious question. Slurs will be reported, so don't bother.

I don't know what the right term is for a person of Indian descent. Is Hindi correct, or is that a religious term? And does is the term gender specific, or not?

If you're from India, then just tell me how you identify yourself.

India=indian, america=american , africa=african, britain=british, canada= canadian. If the person isn't really sensitive those all should be fine, you can call them what they are, if it's wrong they will correct you as long you don't say somthing racial or steriotypical. Good question

Indians. In the UK, they are called Asians (I think it also means Pakistanese). But in France, Asians are Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Chinese, etc. But, overall, people from India are called Indian.

Hindi is indeed the term for the religion, so that's not a geographical description.

Cannot guarantee this is 100% PC but I will add my two cents. I believe "Indian" is acceptable. You might want to say "East Indian" or "Asian Indian" to differentiate between American Indian/Native American. I guess "Asian" is a catch-all, but most people will think Japanese, Chinese or Korean. A common term is "South Asian".

Are you sure this personal really is from India? Many westerners cannot tell the difference between someone from India and someone from Pakistan.

I would stick with Indian. You don't know if someone is necessarily Hindi (sort of like you don't know if a black person in America is African-American, Islander, etc and some get offended if you pick the wrong one).

i was engaged to a man from India. he was Hindi but we referred to him and his family as Indians. There is no slur in calling them from the country in which they originate. just as i find no offense for someone to call me American. I am from america.

People from India are called Indians
