It means that you are wasting you time since you will not be affecting anything. The horse is stolen so what will locking the stable help.

Well, it's kind of pointless- to lock the stable after the horse was
stolen ! So, looking back it would have been more lucrative to
protect the investment in the first place and you would have less grief.

I've never heard it but the way I read it is that theres no point in doing something after the fact that could have prevented a certain event from happening in the first place.

Sure do pardner....It means, don't burn your bridges after things don't go yer way.

However, our family has used it on a few rare occasions with the intent of telling another to "not give up hope". Happy trails....
