It depends on what you want to do. For one, if you go to a DSLR, you should probably decide on which brand to marry, since sooner or later you'll want to upgrade to get new technology, but you won't want to buy new lenses / flashes over again.
I think that both Nikon and Canon are very good. I'm not very good, but I feel that Nikon has a little better lenses, but Canon better digital sensors. But that's just what I think, I might be completely off.
Also, don't ignore the Sony Alpha, wich is Sony's entry into DSLR. It can take Konika Minolta Maxxim lenses and flashes, has a super steady shot or image stabilization built in and works great.

How expensive is "not so expensive"? I shoot Nikons and the D70 is used professionally and is around 400 to 500 for the body only. The 18-70 DX kit lens is also used professionally and costs around $200. It's hard to judge the price though because you don't say what you want to photograph and how much you want to spend.

Cannon. Cannon are not expensive, they have many useful features and they are very resistant (u know what I mean, let it fall, or something) and the replacements are easy to find and they are not expensive neither, I have a Cannon camera, they are way to good, I am not a professional photographer and my camera neither, but pictures go on like WoW!!!

I was to recommend a prosumer camera to start like Kodak or Sony... The best DSLR for your money is the Canon xti.
