Hard Question to answer. Depends on how much...If you can afford it or have siblings, try sending them on a cruise

Lots of good ideas here to work with. Bearing in mind we dont know the age of your parents and their activity levels, the travel idea is really nice but they may or may not want to travel. A big party with the whole family and friends, portraits, scrapbooks are all good ideas too. You could always ask their input, or start asking non obvious probing questions about their desires to travel or friends and family they havent seen in awhile.

Wow 40 years that is really amazing. I would go with something very sentimental, like a photo of when they were first dating maybe, or when they first met, that kind of thing and have it framed in a beautiful frame, that way they can look at it all the time, and remember why they fell in love.

Dont get them anything. Throw them a big party with all of their closes friends and family. Hire a photographer to take pictures of everyone at the party and then compile them in an album for your parents with some of their origional wedding pictures. We did this for my grandparents 50th and they loved it.

Gather tons and tons of pictures beginning with your parents as children, teens, young adults, when they met, got married etc. Add the children as they were born and do the same thing. Hire someone to put it on video and add music to it. They will think it is priceless.

I think a trip would be nice. But if they are anything like my parents then they want something simple, meaningful from the heart........All my siblings and I and our families got together and took a family portrait had it framed and gave it to them at a nice family dinner..........my mom loves it because she can see her children and grandchildren all together everyday in that pic. it hangs over her living room couch now......

What we did (my sis's and bro) was we had a nice after noon get together. We got some people they hadn't seen in many moons to show up. My older sister's made a scrapbook for them, and we kids (only) Got our picture done for my mom and dad. They loved it, everything was mad from scratch.
