They had lived apart for nearly 10 years, so it wasn't a huge surprise. And when people are separated for that long, it's highly unlikely that anything other than discord will turn out to be the reason. There were no accusations that I'm aware of on either side.

Divorce can be a cruel severance of a way of life,
a path of ending and change, it happens because one person grows in a different way than their partner does.
Divorce is an Opportunity for REBIRTH.

The private reason I often heard was that Mrs. Stanley had serious mental health issues and routinely accused Dr. Stanley of many unsubstantiated things due to his long work hours and time commitments with First Baptist Church.

Well, you'd aveto be a little off in the head to hang with this guy for over 40 years. That type of lifestyle will drive you over the edge anyway.
