The laws are much more lenient on animals then they are on people.
Back in the day they used to experiment on the mentally ill and those children they put into the State asylums (refer to the movie One flu over the coo coo's nest. They got this idea from somewhere). These children did not have anywhere else to be put so they were put in these places.

It would be nice if the scientists did not have to experiment on anything, people or animals. When someone wants to breed there dog, or not spay or neuter there pets that pet or those puppies or kittens from that pet just might end up as a experiment animal. Sad but true....

Look at all the things learned and helpful to main kind from those critters and or people who were experimented on. Epileptics have a great drug that was found as a experiment on those in insane asylems....most people like the results but do not want to know how those results were acquired.

Though I guess we feel there may be a need for testing on animals, we have to remember, animals kill for a reason, to eat. I feel strongly that we should test on the sub humans, people that tortured others for their own gratification, such as paedophiles or anyone that hurts innocent children, these people are not human and therefore be used for something like this, this type of testing is probably too good for them, but why test on animals that bring children joy, test on something that nobody would object to. Afterall, you would get a better result on a human.

This is more of an ethical question. OK, you would agree we need medicine, vaccines, etc. right? Well, there's is high tech. computer simulated experiments. If those "pass", then it goes into a second phase (animals), usually mice. According to the computer sims. the drug should pass with flying colors. Sometimes they don't, and the drug is changed, aand back to phase 1. Now, what would have happened if it skipped the phase 2, and went strait into humans?

Because animals can often make good models for people, so we can test things on animals to see if they will harm or benefit people. Better an animal die from a badly made drug than a person, right?

Because they get in too much trouble when they experiment on humans.

Because if they used the (product) on humans first they are unsure if they will be killed or hurt. It is better if animals die first than humans dying first.

because animals are less expensive than humans, and smaller in size too

So they don't have to experiment on humans.

Because humans are smart enough not to volunteer.
