Sad, ain't it? Vultures come from everywhere.
I was just listening to some lady on the radio, she was emigrating and all her possessions were on there. Apparently, the bustards smashed the container open & scattered all her stuff all over the beach, ruined it all with salt water.

The goods would only cause further damage to the enviroment if they were left.
The scavengers are doing an ecological service and saving the owners the expense of collecting soiled goods that have no resale value.
So long as they report their findings to the clerk of wrecks ,so that the owners or insurers can choose whether or not to collect the items than there shouldnt be a problem in removing the debris from the beach.

I think you have got this wrong ,they are not stealing it is salvage, and the salvage company's who take the cargo off the ships must give the owners first options to bye it back .
the people on the beach are wrong only in the way that the did not sign a salvage form, if they had been stealing the police would have done something about it and there would have been some arrests made .

It's called salvage and is legal. The reason a captain is the last to leave a sinking vessel isn't because of some noble code. It's because the captain wants to be sure that the ship is lost. If the sinking ship was deserted, anyone could tie on a line and tow it to shallow water and claim ownership. Flotsam and jetsam is fair game for anyone that wants to lay claim by recovery.

Probably not.
But this accident doesn't really equate to a crash like those you mention. It's much more like a breakdown at the side of the road due to engine failure etc....
That said, I don't like what they've been up to and I'm glad the police have shut the beach off.

It wasn't nicking, it was beach combing and the rest of us are feeling envious too because we couldn't make it. Can't believe the shipping company left it so long before sending in their salvage team.
