Checking for residual is an easy thing to do. You take the flush syringe, which most of the time is a 60cc syringe, insert it into the pegtube opening, and pull back slightly. If the syringe fills up with whatever feeding is being given via the peg, then you can say that you have residual.
Please make sure that you understand that when you pull back on the syringe and you get TUBE FEEDING RETURN, this is residual. NOT ACTUAL STOMACH FLUIDS, OR WATER, but only feeding.

My mother is tube fed she is given water every three hours. Should you check for residual during the hours she is actually on the machine. She is on the machine from 4:15 pm to 6 am. She is given water at 7pm, 10pm and 4am
