No planes. You can get a bus ticket from Bangkok to Ban Phe, Rayong at any travel agency, Khao San Road travel agencies can all handle this. The bus will take you to the dock where you take a ferry to Koh Samet. Depending on the wait for the ferry, the trip will take 4-6 hours.

You can just wing it if you are not too concerned where you stay. The northern end of the island has most of the resorts and entertainment. The Malibu resort ($50-$60 for A/C rooms) is in the middle on the east coast. You can get ferry boats to either of these places. If you want to go to one of the smaller, out of the way places you will have to find a boatman to take you from the Koh Samet dock.

The southern end of the island has extremely beautiful beaches and ocean views but is very quiet, small bar/restaurants, no entertainment, no big resorts. The accomodations are small huts on the beach with fans. Excellent for a quiet get away in a beautiful setting.

There are no flights as Samet is only a few hours out of Bangkok.

You can take an air-con bus from Ekkamai bus terminal (Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok, also called the Eastern Bus Terminal) to Rayong. It takes around three hours and costs about 85baht - just over £1!

From Rayong bus terminal get a tuk tuk (taxi) to the boat terminal - Ban Phe. Then jump on a boat to Koh Samet - 40 minutes, just 30baht.

You don't need to book bus tickets in advance, just turn up on the day at any time and buy one from the counter.

:) Have fun

I would look at Koh Samui - certainly for a first time visit, - it has its quiet spots, is an island, hire a bike or car, takes an hour to drive around the whole island, and find a place you like most, chaweng or Lamai the party places, others quiet and sedate, but plentu to do, whereas 2 weeks at Koh Vhang or Koh Samet would be probably too long, especially if you strike the rainy season, or the times when the sea around there is fully of stinging jellyfish, as can happen !

Koh samed is only 4 hours away from bangkok by bus.2-3 hours by car. There's a plane to Koh Chang.....which is the closet airport to samed..but after that you will take a couple hour to get to samed anyway.I dont see the point of taking plane. But if you mean koh samui...then its a different story! I am usually go to samed like once a month! Its not that painful to go by wheels!!

Hi, I am afraid there is no flight into Koh Samet/Koh Samed. You will have to take the ferry from Rayong town for a 30mins ride there. Rayong is about 3.5hours away from Bangkok.

Yes, if you're meaning Koh Samui. My daughter has just booked her internal flights for a holiday in Thailand in a month's time. She's doing it the other way around, Bangkok to Chiang Mai in the North for the elephant trekking and then Chiang Mai down to Koh Samui but you can get flights from Bangkok to anywhere in Thailand. Best not to leave it until the last minute. You could confirm this on http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com/ and anything else you're wondering about.

I booked my flights from Bangkok to Ko Samui which cost £40
you have to book it via the Bangkok airport website - it is best to book in advance online as it is generally cheaper.
