I'd suggest having a discussion with your in-laws and let them know that the area that their stuff is stored in is needed by you and give them a date to remove it. No need to be angry of rude about it but just state that their stuff has been there long enough and you would appreciate if they found somewhere else to store their belongings. If you can get your wife (their daughter) on your side it may make it easier also. Best of luck.

Well you can 1) talk to the in laws about removing their stuff, 2) are you charging storage fees, (which is legal in most states, but has to be, what normal storage units pay. 3) If they are neither interested in gettting the items, you have to give them a written notice of intent...that you are going to to remove the stuff. and they have 10, 20, 30 days to remove it, if it isnt removed in said time, then you have the right to discard items at your discresion, I would recomend www.craigslist.com. you can post these items for free, and you can either sell, give them away or what not, all you do is on the left hand of the page pick your state, then pic your city...If it is clothes, I would donate them to the local salvation army, homeless shelter, womans shelter etc. This way you are giving back to the community. Hope that helps

Let them know that you've got to have their stuff out of your garage. Give them a reasonable time frame in which to accomplish this, along with contact info for some recommended and reputable storage places in the area. Also offer to help them move their things into whichever storage area they decide to use. Have a plan outlined in which you will require they have their things out of your garage by X date, with consequences if they do not have their things out by that time (i.e.: you'll deliver all their things to their doorstep, you'll put things up for sale, whatever). Then, and this is the tricky part as they are your in-laws, STICK TO YOUR GUNS. If they don't have their items out (or have shown a reasonable effort to make the date you've set), follow through with your plan.
Good luck!

Be nice and if they do not want to pick it up, here are my ideas,
1- Give them a time frame, and if lthey do not get their stuff, yard sale.
2- After the time frame, put their stuff in storage, and just pay the first month (to be nice), then drop off the keys and paperwork to the inlaws, and tell them the first month is covered.

tell them I know you want me to hold it but if you don't get yoru stuff out of my garage then I would charge you 50 to 100 a month and if don't want to pay then here time frame for you to pick it up and if after that date and you still not come pick it up even I gave you 2 weeks then I am going to have Garage sales that weekend and that way I have money myself.
I don't care about in laws but I do care about my wife smiling.

Depends on their situation. If they are not able to move it, don't have a home or are in some situation that makes it hard for them then you need to work with them. If they are just being lazy and keep putting off getting it then you need to give them a deadline and tell them its going to Goodwill by such a date. But be diplomatic, you don't want to start a war in your family, its not worth it over some junk. Anything in there that you might use?

Take it over to their house yourself. My in-laws and I had a huge falling out. All they had at my house went in their front yard at night in some crappy weather (nothing that would be ruined, though, but just enought to piss them off). If you get along with them, though, just take it over there when you know they are home. Just show up with it and say, "I had some free time so I thought I'd bring this over because I thought you might be needing it." Then they have to take it off your hands, or they'll look like a couple of jerks.

Take it from me don't touch that with a ten ft pole. Let your spouse deal with it. They are your in-laws, not your parents. If you sell, get ride of it you will never hear the end of it and your spouse will be in the middle. It will be much better coming from your spouse. If your spouse is aware that the both of you need that room ask how they want to handle it. Good luck....

dpending on which state you live in, you only have to store another's property for 30 days after 30 days it becomes your own property to dispose of as you deem fit. i would reccomend you contact such as your local court house to find out how long you need to hold someone's property before you can dispose of it. i would also reccomend you stop storing your in laws stuff in your garage
