I don't like the hearts. I know, I'm weird.
I just trim the bottom off, so it sits flat, then trim the points off the leaves. Then I put the whole thing in a bowl with a little water, and cover it. Pop it into the microwave for a few minutes - till the leaves pull out easily.
Then I dip the leaves in Parm and butter. YUMMY - Now I'm craving Artichokes!

Boil the whole artichoke. When its done you can eat the fleshey part of the leafs. Dip the individual leaves in lemon juice or mayonaise, then just scrape the meat off the leaf with your teeth. Then you can eat the artichoke heart. Yummy they are delicious.

You dont actually eat the outer leaves, but the traditional way to eat one is to pull off the individual leaves and pull them between your teeth, which pulls off the lovely flesh. I cut the sharp edges off of each leaf with scissors, then steam the artichoke in water and lemon juice (keeps it from discoloring) for about 1/2 hour. Then, I drain it and stuff it with shrimp and onions, parsley, mixed with bread crumbs or stuffing-push a little down around each leaf. You just gave me an idea for my din din! Thanks I also eat the hearts-you can buy them canned too) I always serve a lemon butter for dipping. The hearts are delicious stuffed too. Google for more recipes

You can steam them, eat the leaves with butter, but you just scape the "meat" out of the leaves.
The artichoke heart is soft and yummy.
My parents use to serve artichokes to us as kids, we loved them. We would get a dish of melted butter and we would dip the leaves in butter, scraping the "meat" out, it was fun!
