Online gambling is getting hit because governments can't tax it. I guarantee that if all online poker rooms had offered the government a percentage of the take (which could be passed on to the consumer with a higher rake) then the online gambling act would have died a quiet death. What it comes down to is that if Americans are spending money the American government believes it has a right to some of that money. Don't ask me why. So they use their ability to regulate to shake down the operators, and if the operators don't play ball then they get shut down. It's behavior you'd expect to see from Tony Soprano, but our government is just organized crime on a grander scale. And gambling is one of the bread and butter industries of the mob.

Not everyone is against it. You are referring to the positions of Governments such as in the USA and France, which legislate to ban online gambling or at least the payment channels. It's interesting that land-based gamling is permitted but not the Internet variety.
The dangers of compulsive gambling? There is also compulsive drinking, smoking and many other human activities. You have to assume that most people are adult and responsible in what they do.
The truth is that the US Government and other 'nay-sayers' are very short-sighted. This is a popular activity that will continue (no matter what) and the only correct approach is to regulate it (which is being done wisely by the UK Government). In this way, the nation gets some income too, which can be used for many social needs.

I don't know if this helps, but keep in mind that in any game based on chance where you have less than a 50% chance of winning, played over time, you will always lose. This is called the Gambler's Ruin. No matter how much you win, if you keep gambling you will eventually hit 0 and not be able to play anymore. Stop before you reach this point. Do not think you can win. It is a losers game. Consider also that gambling is a form of entertainment, not a form of income. Think of it more like a subscription fee; the more you play, the more it costs. For many gamblers this is acceptable, however in your case it sounds like you are no longer enjoying the game. So why pay for cable you don't watch?

The government is against it because gambling is illegal in the US and these online places operate mostly from small island countries in the caribean. Also, this makes it extremely difficult to collect taxes on the winnings.

The US govt is against it because they cannot tax it. There are also many others in govt that push their morals on the US population through laws which is NOT their job.
