A four hour trip is no longer than the usual time between either breakfast and lunch, or lunch and dinner when at home. I would think that two sandwiches, along with plenty of drinks and some fresh fruit is fine. Something easy and healthy like apples or grapes, they're easy to eat, and pack in a zip lock type bag to be used for the garbage.

The problem is what's on the sandwiches, just fat (butter) and sugar (jam). Rather than that, just make him a large sandwich made of quality deli-meats, lettuce, sliced tomatoes, ect.
Toss in a 8oz carton of skim or 1% milk and you have a meal for the road.

When your hubby eats this, he will feel full and his stomach will be happy for a lot longer than eating all that fat and sugar It's also a lot better for him because it has protein that your sandwich doesn't.

You're making sandwiches of a 4 hour trip? Is he going to be there for a while, and then drive back home - so he's gone for 8-10 hours?

If so, then make 4 or 5 sandwiches and put them a cooler.

If he's just going to be driving for 4 hours before he gets to his destination, give him a mug of coffee. 4 hours isn't long enough to bother making sandwiches - imho. 6 hours is the average length of time between meals.

Use at least 4, but up to 8 slices of bread.

Wrap them separately so that he doesn't have to eat them all at once to keep them fresh.

Give him a thermos (hot or cold drink), some fruit or easy to eat (non messy) snacks.

Why don't you make him something a bit more filling like cheese and tomato???

My husband always requires two sandwiches (PB&J, tuna, or egg) for his lunch. But he also has some beef jerky and yogurt and a handful of mini candy bars.

I don't know how he stays so slim.
