Because they're monstrous chunks of ice in a cold climate that is only slightly above freezing. There so huge that there size keeps them cool and also chills the water around them so that even though they will eventually melt, the process if very slow.

because they are being formed in very cold areas. if you place them in a torid zone, they will melt in no time.
