Sounds like our family ... my daughter-in-law has a family party for the kids birthdays.
You want something easy for the food ... does your son like pasta dishes? If he does, then something like Baked Ziti which can be made ahead and reheated is good. Serve it with a green salad and a fruit salad. Most kids like fruit salad ... even if they just eat one of the fruits. Dessert obviously would be cake.
With such a wide range of ages for the kids, entertainment might be tricky. We decided that conversation was the answer. DIL had some pictures of the birthday child placed around the house ... usually of the kid doing something special ... this got everyone to talking ... she had some games available for the older kids ... Monopoly, Sorry ... and had kid songs on the CD player.
Everyone enjoyed the day.

For my neices one year we went to the local little park up the street that had a picnic table, we just had sandwich trays and chips and dip and cake, it was fun, all the kids could play and the adults just sat around and talk. Then we got out the presents for her to open and afterwards left, it was fun. Also at home you can do the same thing, have it outside where the kids can play in the yard, make up a couple food trays and just do it like that.

wow im sorry ur getting some real junk answers here (the people who suggest strippers and michael jackson)! Um, im on the same boat, trying to keep my one eyar old bday in march a family thing...and am wondering how to make it awesome for her as well as the family. maybe you could have a lot of finger food? Like my daughter loves cut up fruits...strawberry, bananas, oranges, anything...maybe you could have a fruit bowl with a mini one for baby =)....pasta, baby can eat that and ahve fun w/it....
entertainment: lots of playing/baby....gift opening....dancing to baby songs, my little one loves to see people jumping haha so that might entertain adults and older kids in a fun way, and baby too. Have fun.

I got a parachute from Gymboree. You have the kids color it in with washable markers and then they can play with it. It holds up to 100 pounds so the older kids can throw the younger kids. They had a blast. After the party you can wash it and it will be ready to go for next time.

For my sons birthday we just had something small with lots of Balloons. They love balloons at this age. I made him cupcakes and made a larger cake also. They don't really know what is going on at this age so it's mainly for you, so provide some cocktails and enjoy!!!
