We used to do this with our French teach too. I always found getting a copy of Paris Match (its France's version of Hello) and asking about the most obvious gossipy bits would work really well. See, they think you're taking an extra interest by buying a magazine in French, while you get to distract them by asking about Posh or a politician's affair or something. Works like a charm!

This question makes me so sad. I think you just might come to a day in the future when you regret not taking the opportunity to learn another language. For example, in college, if you have to take language classes towards a degree (as many people do) you might wish your proficiency in French was a little better so you didn't have to take and pay tuition for so many classes.

Not sure, but my old french teacher would talk for the whole class on such entertaining subjects such as the Paris Metro, or the Paris sewer system, and even once or twice about the TGV. We didn't even have to prompt him!

Just suck it up and do the work. Eventually you will have to do some work somewhere in life, if you ever want to make it anywhere. And you might as well get the hang of it if you want to succeed in college. So, stop trying to beat the system. Beside, she might catch on to what you are doing and increase your work. Well, sorry for being so anal...but it's the truth.
