It's true...the brown in any brown colored spirit is from the barrel it's aged in (with the exception of very low-end, cheap spirits where caramel color is added). All spirits are crystal clear coming from the still...ALL. The majority of flavors are from the barrel...oak contains a huge variety of flavors within the wood, including vanilla, wood, leather, earth, grass, and others (to varying degrees of subtlety). On top of that, the barrels used are toasted to some degree and frequently charred, too. Each of these factors affects the flavors imparted in the spirit...even more so than the source of the spirit itself (grain, grape, etc.).

Yes...you taste the barrel.

You can definitely taste the charred barrel in some whiskeys. Gentleman Jack, twice filtered through charcoal and aged in a charred barrel, and you can taste the charcoal in it. But this isn't true for all whiskeys.

if your whiskey is brown then you are tasting the barrel. The flavor does not come from the charred part it comes from the caramelizing of the wood behind the charred part.

Giving me a thumbs down will not change the facts. Distilled spirits are clear when they are raw. Whiskey does not take on a brown color until it develops in a barrel and absorb flavor and color. Look it up.

There are different types of whiskey. They all generally have the same flavor. Whiskey tastes like whiskey. Just like strawberries taste like strawberries. There is nothing to compare it to. It's not that bad if you mix it with coke or diet coke. Diet coke adds a vanilla flavor to it.

Sometimes I taste it. It's not a hallucination, though. It happens sometimes. Try adding a pinch of salt (to the whole barrel). This always helps me! Hope it helps you! : )
