Dogs are like women and their heat cycles can vary.

Usually a dog is in heat for 3 weeks - bleeding during the second week of the heat. Dogs usually go into their heat cycle every 6 months...but like I said it can vary from dog to dog.

But I will tell you this...if you are not planning on breeding her, it will be best for her to get her spayed before she goes into more heat cycles. If spayed before the first heat cycle, your pet has a less than 1 percent chance of developing breast cancer.
If spayed after one heat cycle, your pet has an 8 percent chance of developing breast cancer. After two years, no protective benefit exists. It really is the healthiest thing for them.

Check with your local vet for more information.

Hi Terry F!!
The female dog comes into season approximately every 6 to 8 months, though this period becomes more erratic with age and is somewhat irregular when cycles first begin.

The exception to the every 6 to 8 months rule are African breeds (Basenji, Rhodesian Ridgeback) who cycle once a year.

When female dogs get older (say, age 7 or older) they do not stop cycling; there is nothing similar to menopause.

Normal estrus in a canine is as follows: 9 days coming in, 9 days in & 9 days going out (average) or 27 days total. Generally a b*tch will come in twice annually, 6 mos apart but this can vary especially if there is another b*itch in the home as females in close proximity will syncronize their cycles in time & this includes the human species.

A dog stays in season for 3 weeks although the obvious signs fade after a week. They go back into heat every 5. to 6 months. Please get your dog spayed.
