The Catholic Church is very agressively anti-gay yet for decades has protected gay pedophile priests who rape and abuse boys, moving the priests around when they are found out, and threatening the young victims if they report their abuse. How can the Catholic Church condemn a private act between consenting adults yet condone abuse against innocent young victimes?

The Catholic Church is openly against consenting gays couples having sex with each other yet has for decades protected gay priests who rape and abuse young victims. The Church hierarchy had plenty of knowledge of this and still protected the priests, moving them to new locations where they could continue their homosexual rape and abuse of young victims. The Church's actions were compounded by the threats that were made to the young victims and their families. This wasn't one or two perverts slipping under the radar.

What do you expect from a Pope that allows people to kneel to him and kiss his ring?

In case this is a legit question, as opposed to an attempt to embarrass Catholics, I will try to answer. Please note that the following is the way I see things and not necessarily the official stance of the Church.

First of all, Catholicism is in agreement with most Christian denominations in that we encourage everyone to hate sin but to love the sinner.

As a Catholic, as a contributor to my local church, as a man, and as a father I dare say I am more outraged and embarrassed by the sexual abuse scandals than others are. When these charges first came up no one believed a priest could do such a thing. The priests, bishops, parents and ordinary church-goers simply dismissed the charges as nonsense. When more and more victims came forward, the hierarchy tried to cover up the scandal as opposed to fix the problem. Why they did this we do not know, the two most likely reasons are to save embarrassment and an extremely slow realization that the church had a real problem.

On a slightly different subject, all law enforcement officers and mental health experts are in agreement that pedophilia and homosexuality are not one and the same. Pedophilia is an abuse of power, it is not exactly about sex. I firmly believe that a voluntary vow of celibacy does not turn anyone into a pedophile.

No the Catholic Church is not against gay people. People ignorantly think this based on the Catholic religious belief regarding marriage. Believing marriage is between a man and a women doesn't make Catholics against gay people. In the Church marriage isn't about a right its about family. Even in the secular view point it cannot logically be argued that heterosexual and homosexuals are not the same simply because men and women are biologically different. A great example of a homosexual Catholic was Andy Warhol. Check out the link about it.

Hi Nathan,I can tell you this as a Catholic, the church is not against gays,it is against the act of homosexuality which it see`s as an offence to God and Man.
The revelations of perverted men in the Priesthood really knocked the Papacy for six,it did not know how to respond in the early day`s and thought that it was just isolated cases and this would quickly go away, they were wrong of course and now thank God they have put measures in place to try to put a stop to this.
Remember too that the Priesthood is a very easy place for perverts to hide in and do what they do,You and I being normal would not just suddenly sexually assault a child so these people were sick before they became Priests and the sanctity of the Priesthood was a very convenient way of going about their evil deeds, thankfully the percentage of Priests involved is very small indeed and their are a majority of good men in the Catholic church who have been deeply sickened by the actions of a few.

The Church does not condone sexual abuse. I do think that they did not handle those situations correctly, which is what has led to so much of the wrongs that have happened.

The Church is not speaking out of two sides of Her mouth; homosexuality is wrong, and so is the harming of young children by anyone, priest or not.
