I have done Singapore twice and Bali once. Singapore doesn't have a beach but Sentosa Island does. You can spend a day there. It is very humid and sticky in Singapore and more of a city than a relaxing place. i wouldn't go back to Bali. It was dead cheap but weather wasn't great and beaches very gray sand colour. Although I haven't been there I would recommend somewhere like Thailand or Malaysia. Penang or Phuket are meant to be great beach places.

Fiji, America, Japan, Raratonga... lots of possibilities. Japan's a really good choice in terms of flight times but I've no idea about beaches there. Any of the Pacific Islands would be good for beaches but if you want to try and even up each of the flight times how about Hawaii? It's certainly not as far as Fiji and you've definitely got the beach thing going on.

It's a real shame you can't afford to travel to York as there are lots of lovely places in Yorkshire. If you can, have another look for cheap travel options, there's probably a way somewhere. Otherwise how about somewhere like Nottingham?

Friends of ours spent 3 days in Singapore when they went 4 years ago, I think the weather was hot and humid though, but they came home in January, so it may differ in August.
they recommended it, and would love to go back.

If you fly Singapore Air you get really good discounted hotels and entry vouchers to attractions in Singapore.
Pretty good for a few days.

Singapore is the most boring city in the world.
Stop off in Hong Kong (one of the most exciting). Great sightseeing and shopping. Great restaurants and nightlife. Great weather in August.
Not sure about the beaches, I'm not really a beach person.

I had a very short stop off in Singapore in November, and wish it had been longer; some friends of mine recommended it too.
Though I've also heard good reports of Dubai, if you're flying Emirates...
