If God and Jesus are the same thing, and God was in physical form as Jesus, when Jesus died and was not yet resurrected, was there no living God?

I mean, if he never really died, what kind of sacrifice was that? And, since God knew he was going to come back anyway, was it really a sacrifice at all?

Jehovah, the Most High, has always been in charge. After all, He did not die. It was his Son, Jesus Christ who was dead for 3 days. After that, Gal. 1:1 says God the Father raised Jesus from the dead.

The unscriptural trinity doctrine obviously has many people confused.

God was in charge. I can't try to explain it because I don't totally understand it, except to mention the Holy Trinity.
