Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If it doesn't go away within a few days consult your doctor.
Take Ibuprofen and try rubbing ibuprofen gel into the painful area.
I currently have some foot pain, I managed to bruise my 5th metatarsal (bone in the foot). I'm on a course of anti-inflammatories and am resting my foot as much as possible.

well, it depends on what kind of pain. Mostly, though, an ice pack will help, but in some cases, a warm compress is better. If it's a stinging pain, stay off it and massage the part where it stings. A pain killer (asprin and the such) will definitely help.

Have just had this!!!!!!! painkillers didn't work & neither did deep heat. Just had to put up with it for a few days til it wore off but was damn painful. Walking around seemed to make it worse by the end of the day. Good luck, you have my sympathy

Does it take a while to be able to put your foot down in a morning, or after you have rested?

I had that happen, and couldn't even walk on it. I took some motrin and rubbed it real hard for about 10 minutes and it went away.
