Global warming is the brutal truth and the world is in definite trouble. People will tell you that the world will go through natural cycles of warming and cooling. They are correct in saying this, because this does happen through a process called the Milankovitch mechanism, but that is not what is causing this warming cycle we are seeing now. This warming cycle is caused by too much CO2 in the atmosphere and CO2 acts like a blanket keeping the warmth or more correctly "long wave radiation" from escaping to space.
All living things contain carbon; it's a simple necessity of life. When we burn things that were once alive, their carbon is released and can combine with oxygen to produce CO2. Fuels such as oil or coal are the remains of living creatures that died millions of years ago. They may be ancient, but the carbon they contained when they were alive is still there and is released when we burn these fuels.
It is not too late to slow down global warming by burning less of these carbon-emitting fuels. We can do it. In 1988 the world was faced with the problem of what to do about the hole in the ozone layer. Nations from around the world got together and signed an agreement called the Montreal Protocol, which banned the production and use of chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs. This agreement was the first of it’s kind where nations got together and collectively agreed to do something to help the planet’s environment. Now the hole in the ozone layer is no longer growing and is expected to repair itself in a few decades.
What you can do to help slow, and maybe even reverse global warming is to learn about it and talk about it. The more people know about what is going on, the more people will be willing to do something about it. First of all, I would recommend watching Al Gores “An Inconvenient Truth” but don’t stop there, continue to learn. Don’t forget the key to global warming is carbon. Whenever you drive a car, turn on a light bulb, turn on your computer (and leave it running with nobody around), turn on the air-conditioning or heat your house you are contributing to the carbon in the atmosphere. You don’t have to give up living altogether, just be conscious of what you’re using and try to reduce your energy consumption. If we do nothing, the world including the United States, is in big trouble in less than 50 years. We have to do something now to prevent the disaster, but a global disaster may be preventable. New Orleans was just a small taste of what will happen if we do nothing.
Another thing, don’t be fooled into thinking that the warm winter we are experiencing is global warming, this is an El Nino and an El Nino can really mess with the weather.
What could be the results of global warming? Well, I already mentioned New Orleans but anyone living within 25 feet of sea level now will be displaced by rising water. Globally we could see the largest refugee problem the world has ever seen after as many as 1 billion people are flooded from their homes. There will be less land for growing crops as the warm dry air from the southwest spreads northeast. What is the now grain belt could very well turn into desert as groundwater sources are depleted. Places like Las Vegas will become the world’s largest ghost town as Lake Mead dries up and can no longer supply the Hoover Dam. People in the eastern US will not suffer the same fate of drying but will see an increase in rainfall causing increased flooding, increasing cases of diseases such as malaria or dengue fever.

No, but I believe it's possible. Global Warming is a theory, it's the idea that humans are the cause for the current changes in our planet's weather and that eventually we will destroy our planet. As much as we add CO2 to the air, a volcano will do that in minutes. How can humans be the primary cause of change? There are so many other factors... and the weather on Earth was turbulent way before our industrial revolution, when we clearly had little if any impact on the planetary ecosystem (ice age anyone?).

Sure .. the earth has warmed up 1 degree in the last 125 years. I am skeptical about what's causing it. I still remember in the 1980's and 90's when it was getting cooler and people said that all the water vapor from emissions were forming too many clouds and reflecting the sun's heat back into space and we were headed for an ice age...
Figure that one out !
