It depends on what you are talking about, anesthetic or pain medications, or if it's dentistry at all. In Dentistry, the Dentist will use a variety of anesthetics that numb you that some still refer to as "Novocain". It just depends on what tooth and where the tooth is at that he's working on in the mouth, upper or lower, anterior or posterior. The duration of numbness needed also is a deciding factor as to which anesthetic is used. There are too many to go into detail, it's best to let the Doctor decide which to use for what patient. There is also the use of N20 or a IV drip is used for some procedures. As for pain medications being prescribed after a procedure. Some don't negate any pain medication such as a simple restoration, while others such as Root canal therapy, Extractions or Surgery all do need the use of a pain medication. It really depends on the procedure preformed, the extent of the trauma to the tooth or tissue caused from the procedure. Most dentist use a variety of pain medications from the smallest of Darvacet N 100, to Percocet or Vicoden ES. If you are concerned about your procedure or the medication that will be prescribed just talk with your dentist, the front desk or your pharmacist. They are all there to help you understand. Good luck!

I find front desk people give you no information other than speak to the doctor. What kind of operation are you speaking about?
