Not required but remember this. I did full service for about 10 years and I did the normal job for those who didn't tip. For those who tipped, I went the extra mile.

Speaking as a gas station attendant at a full serve gas station you should always tip 15% like you do for a waiter lol j/k but that would be sweet. Seriously though you should tip and it is greatly appreciated by the attendant. We really do not get tipped that much unfortuantley. I usually get about $5 a shift (7 hours), So it is not exactly the best job tip wise. Most tips are just loonie or twonie (Canada) I have gotten $5 before though. But if you felt so bad about not tipping them this what you should have done. Even though they did not have a slip to add a tip you should have told them to charge you how ever much more you wanted to tip them to your credit card and they could have taken that amount out of the cash they had on them and put it in there own pocket. This would have worked perfectly where i work.

It was never the custom where I grew up to tip at gas stations. And I certainly never did in New Jersey, where there were no self service gas pumps.
A lot of people nowadays who don't traditionally receive tips may try to shake money out of you. Don't let them.
A general point: The custom of tipping started, in part, with tips to domestic servants from overnight guests. This carries over naturally to restaurant, hotel, and salon employees, but not, I think, to retail workers or business owners.

I do not think it is appropriate because the gas is usually more expensive because those guys who pump the gas make more than at regular gas station, and because the gas usually costs more, you ARE tipping them without knowing it. The tip is built into the cost of the gas.

Way back when all gas stations were full service, nobody considered tipping. Unfortunately, I don't know about now.

I think that would be a persoal decision because I as waiter for 2 years to help pay for college and when I started it was 10% of total bill but now it's like 15% so I'ts more personal , but there may be advatages like gets to you quicker or is mandtory in your state like OR. there is NO self. but if you tip I woudn't go overboard like a 1.00 or so and say something buy yourself a soda if it's hot or coffe if cold you may see they we get to you quicker and show you some kindness or if you need help they would be more willing to help.
As for price of gas that's business, unless when you tip he say's no the politely ask do the pay you extra or it's min wage.
hope this help in your decision

No. Just give them your business. No one tips gas stations these days, and in the past, only wealthy people did. It was not at all common. -- Not like a cabbie or porter.

I say yes, tip. Especially if it is cold, rainy or extremely hot weather. A buck or two would be appreciated by the attendant I am sure of that. Service work pays crappy, and I am sure that is directly related to the level of customer service nowadays. Just a thought.

I don't think people really think about this much, good idea, cause I am sure they don't make much. Since I am on such a tight budget I would give them as much as I was able to . Just let them know it is for them and not the station. Some employers don't want there employees taking tips. to me it just let's them know u really appreciate them.

wow,i haven't heard of that in years. i know they used to recieve tips years ago but i'm not sure if they are allowed to anymore. you could always offer it if you want but i don't think there is a % like on a food bill. maybe a few bucks just to show your appreciation is good. interesting q.
