Go to the party, but with a trusted friend (or two) who will not let you alone at all during the party. Be sure to speak to Mark as well and let him know that you are not interested in John and would appreciate if he can just keep an eye out in case he sees John acting irrationally towards you. Keep your guard up, guys, especially when drinking, can do stupid things, say stupid things, and be very cruel. Be sure NOT to drink yourself so you are able to responsibly make your own decisions.

Go to the party. Meet John. Be nice, polite, but that's it. anything too friendly and he will push his luck - if you stand your ground and act like you deserve respect, you'll get it, even if you made an initial slip up of things with the lapdance story.
Then learn from the mistake and only flirt with your man.

Never an easy situation. Leading a guy on is so easy it is sometimes done unknowingly. I wouldn't worry about him trying anything at the party. Take a friend with you and have her stay with you during the party. If he's an alcoholic, I wouldn't get involved with him.
Go to the party and have fun.
Good Luck

talk to your friend Mark about this and let him chaperone you - keep distance between you and john and not let the two of you get alone somewhere - and enjoy the party. If there are drinks there John may get out of hand or try to get you drunk so be very careful with that.

Talk about your fear with your best friend Mark, take someone with you if you feel insecure to go alone, dress up, go to the party, be yourself and if John makes a move you don't like, politely refuse. You don't have to engage in anything you don't want to.

talk to mark i guess,,he is your friend so should look out for you and perk up your now faltering name.you dont have to flirt this way to get attention,,they obviously like you for a reason so go with that,,,,not everybody has to be your friend so dont worry about it so much.or take a girlfriend and agree to watch out for each other but do make sure you and whoever can get home safely so if you feel it is all getting out of hand you can beat a fast exit.learn from this,,,,,dont say what you dont mean,,,not all will understand this is just how you are,,some will take it the wrong way.

Go ahead and go to the party. Just keep your eyes open; if the opportunity comes up, you could tell him you were just b s ing on the phone. You could also express your disinterest to your friend Mark.
