1 last thing! The justice system does have the final say! I know that from having many friends who are lawyers including family members! The system will manipulate laws to fit what it wants and for a lot of so called crimes thaey will push for the best they can get even though it is unwarranted because it looks good on their legacy! They don't care about how many people they have to destroy to make a name for theirselves!! FACT!!! People need to stop being so ignorant! Stupidity is not a disease! Just get off your *** and learn something!

You have to draw the line somewhere. And at 37 years old, isn't there any other injustices that could make you angry besides the fact that you can't pork a 15 year old? And "24 months" is TWO YEARS. Sounds different when you call it what it is doesn't it? Do you have daughters? Would you want your 15 yr old daughter screwing a 37 yr. old?

Grow up...get yourself a WOMAN (if you can) And stop fighting for the rights of pedophiles. They knew the law before they did the deed. No pity here.

****YOU mentioned your age not me. And that 17 yr old knew the law as well. Do I agree with it? No. But that's where the law was drawn in his state and he should have known better.

The injustice your talking about is one that you created, and one I created and one that every single voter in America (or in this particular case Georgia) created. The laws are written and signed into law by elected officials - our representatives, senators, delegates, assemblymen and governors. And we put them there. It is convenient to blame the lawyers. For some reason there is this misguided belief that Lawyers, prosecutors specifically are free to ignore the law. That somehow the mandates of the legislature are not binding on them. The inconvenient truth is that lawyers, even prosecutors, must follow the law. Its easy to blame the prosecutor in this case becasue there is some discretion on what crime the young man is charged with, but that doesn't excuse the lawmakers from keeping around an antiquated statute that makes illegal and imposes such a stiff mandatory punishment, for what amounts to consensual sodomy between kids who are two grades apart. The bottom line is that the law is on the books and the prosecutor in charge of the case has a sworn duty to uphold the law. I don't think we want a justice system where our judges and lawyers only uphold the laws they agree with. That's not how democracy works. We the people, through our elected officials, decide what is a crime and what isn't. The lawyers simply enforce what we tell them to. The fact is, I agree that the punishment doesn't fit the crime in this case. I would dare say that on Friday and Saturday night all over the country similar "crimes" are being committed. So, sure there are plenty of "*******" that should "burn in hell for this" - starting with you and me and every other voter who send elected officials to our state houses to enact laws like this one. Shame on them and shame on us for continuing to vote for them.

You should move to Canada where our laws are the dramatic opposite. If you are a 50 year old, you could have sex with a 14 year old without being charged (as long as you weren't a person in authority to this person, ie. teacher, counselor etc). Persons younger than 14 can consent if the age difference is less than two years between them and the person is not in a position of authority.
There has been a fight on for some time to raise the age of consent here to at least 16 (when the age difference between the parties is more than two years).

Some weird people are calling a 17 y.o. - high school junior? a pedophile for receiving oral sex from a 15 y.o. - sophomore?

That's just stupid. They're both in high school for chrissake. That's more than women schoolteachers get for raping young boys.

Wrong, wrong, wrong!

It was wrong for the prosecutor to push this case, because justice is not served here. And then the legislature passed a law changing this from a felony, but didn't make it retroactive. WTF?

It is the same way here, lesser penalty if you are 17 and she is 15 but it is still a crime.
There has to be a line somewhere and this is it.
Otherwise, where does it stop, if he's 17 and she's 14 is it wrong, or 13, or 12, you can keep redrawing the line until it's down to is 9 OK?
Sorry, but we have to protect children who don't have the maturity to make this decision yet with laws.

Savannah's got it EXACTLY right. The legislature makes the laws and if the family of the girl and the community in general in this case is pushing for the prosecution, the police and DA don't have much choice. It IS the law after all. If you don't like the laws of your jurisdiction, it is not only your right, but your responsibility to work to change them. Statutory rape laws (which this falls into) are some of those that might need "updating" based on new morality and values of society. Laws, after all, are supposed to reflect that to some degree.

I think you are directing your vitriol in the wrong direction. The legislative branch creates the law, the justice system merely enforces what the legislative puts to paper. Blame them, you can't blame the cops and courts for doing what they are designed and directed to do.

i agree. Being from Ga. myself, I can tell you, most of this is racial. We still have redneck judges and cops and prosecutors, who want to put the black boy in jail. Sadly, racism is alive and well in the south.
