Rudeness in my opinion simply derives from unhappiness in people.
I think there is kind of bitterness in people when they see someone is happy in so many way, shape and form. Unhappy people naturally become so uneasy and anxious for something that are happy and free around them. And they really don't know how to deal with their unknown unexplainable eerie feeling inside their mind. Since they don't know how to deal with their own feeling inside their mind, they sort of like 'protect' themselves by being rude and harsh towards others.
Unconsciously, unhappy people like it when everybody else unhappy. Misery loves company. But try not to take rudeness too seriously, because at the of the end you can't let any of it mean anything to you, because it doesn't really matter. Just try to keep in mind that misery always loves company.
The question now is: do you want to accompany misery? As simply as that.

Often people from different cultural or social groups have different values or standards for things like politeness. The Japanese are over polite, Africans can be very direct. Look at Jade & co v. Shilpa. I suspect the lady on your doorstep would be suprised that you took offence.

There is a phrase you can use to protect yourself from self appointed critics. "If I valued your opinion, I would be offended". But don't be suprised if people object.

most of the time people like to see how far they can push you before you snap, then make you the center of their gossiping. People hate there lives and want everyone around them to be miserable. You can really get under their skin be being nice. They hate that, it won't make you feel like a jerk, but you'll still have a little satisfaction of knowing that you got to them.

I've really found that it's best to ignore people like that because if you don't your feeding into their miserable life and contributing more fuel to the fire by saying anything to them. It's only gonna make you madder and make them feel good about having more time to be rude because you responded.

She is a narcissist.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Behavior or a fantasy of grandiosity, a lack of empathy, a need to be admired by others, an inability to see the viewpoints of others, and hypersensitive to the opinions of others.

Be glad you don't have it.
