Here's a mad answer for you!
Find a charity of your choice, then speak to a local supermarket about a sponsored sit in a bath of baked-bean for so many hours, not only will you meet some amazed onlookers and future friends, but the supermarket will love the idea and you'll bring in money for a lucky charity, also phone the local papers if you get it setup. I'd do it myself, but would worry about any wind caused in the area plus greenhouse gases.

Conservation Volunteers is a great way to make new friends whilst getting exercise and doing something useful for the environment.

The Big Brother, Big Sister programs are good. You could meet other Big Brothers and Sisters and you can mentor at the same time. Its a great opportunity, and you could also get your community service hours in if you're in high school also. Check the website below to see if they have a center in your area.

there is no need for you to choose what type of volunteering you like because for me if you are sincere to help others then you dont choose what fits on you. because no matter how small you did for the need of others, that would be thanked for the people who needed it most.
