I want to lift weights for exercise, not to bulk up or body build. I just want to tone. I walk 2 miles with an incline 3 times a week, I do an ab routine 3 times a week, and do 30 push ups twice a week. I'm vegetarian and watch my calories. I try to avoid processed "junk food". How many days should I lift and how much weight? Thanks

Well, in order to 'tone' you will need to lift 'lighter' weights with 'more' reps. Example: (8lb. weights,3 sets-20-25 reps each set), YES you will burn during your last set but what you are doing is "shocking the muscle"-per se' which is good because your body/muscles know something different is going on and the more you do these reps, your muscles will begin to form. Another example is: 25-20-10..start off doing 25 reps, then rest 30 seconds..20 reps, rest..then 10 rest..Try to do this every other day, NOT everyday! your muscles need time for recovery.

Just know that the HEAVIER the weight (less reps), the MORE BULKY (muscle mass) you get... the LIGHTER the weights (MORE reps) the more tone/cut you get.

alternate days between upper and lower body w/one day as rest (sunday or whenever) so, 3 upper body and 3 lower body.

start at low weight that is easy for u to do about 20 reps. now do 5 sets of those (100 reps when through). if u feel ur straining about the 13-14 rep u need to lower weight more by 5-10 lbs (cant tell u exact weights bc everyone is different)
