You will never understand until your a parent. I am only 27 and have a 5 year old son. I know what it is like to leave home young, I was 19. I had no other choice. With my son, I will make sure he is ready to face the world the day he leaves home. We know that the world is a scary place to be in and the more we can shelter the child from harm the better. 20 is not a bad age to leave home, unless the person can't take care of themselves.

Because most children nowadays are totally incapable of taking care of themselves (rent, insurance (home, health, car), food) until they get enough training, support, and wisdom from their parents. And get a job that pays more than $10/hour.
Given the option of having a successful child out on their own by keeping them around a bit more versus "letting go" as some say here, only to have to take them back at 22, 25, or 30...
I know I want my daughter out when she's ready - but I don't want her coming back to live. I've got plans!

In this day and age, children aren't leaving home until much later in life - it wouldn't be the parent's choice - except in your case.

to keep them company. parents take care of their children for years. its hard for many parents to lose their children to adulthood. when that happens the many parents feel useless and suffer because of an "empty nest"
