I'll start by saying that I'm having a difficult time understanding how a 3 year old would have homework but I'll take it as an example of how homework can cause stress in young children.

I do believe that homework stresses can affect children more and more, particularly as they progress through the later grades. It is critical that at a young age they establish good study skills including time management skills. In this vein, one avenue of attack could be the use of a planner. I have seen students who are struggling as early as grade one and two use a notebook to have their work written down; this is then sent home to the parent to assist the student to complete the work.

As the student progresses through their grades, the responsibility to complete the planner then rests with them. The key word here is "responsibility," because as the child gets older if they do not write down what the homework expectations are, then the parent is obviously not able to follow through and assist with the homework.

I would also question whether the amount of homework would be the sole reason for which a young person would commit suicide. Typically, there would be other critical things going on in a young person's life, and the homework pressures could probably be viewed as the final trigger that put them in the place where suicide was the the route they chose.

So, yes - a planner is one option; time management as a whole is another; supportive parents; personal responsiblity.

When is comes to the mental health of a child, it is critical for the parents, and the school system to be aware of the needs of the child and the warning signs that the child is in trouble.

Kids need a swift kick in the pants and we need to stop treating them like babies. Sorry, you have to work for what you want in this world. Get used to it. It's not stress, it's poor time management and the bad influence of their parents suggesting it's stressful.
