When I was in university I usually drank coffee, and once I took a caffeine pill while cramming for an exam. I was able to study almost all night, but was exhausted during the exam and tired for several days after.

I don't know if the extra studying outweighed the exhaustion factor or not. Being so tired affected my memory, thinking, writing ability, and generally slowed me down. I don't think it was worth the price and I have never repeated the experiment.

My exam strategy now is to study as much as reasonably possible and get a good night's sleep before the exam, with last minute cramming right up to the exam. I also try to avoid credit overload and to plan my studying as strategically as possible.

Excessive sleepiness can be symptomatic of depression, which interacts with stress and affects many students. If that is a factor, you might try increasing your daily exercise and talking to a counselor.

A strong cup of coffe usually helps...though since you want to study, you might want to try tea. it contains anti-oxidants that makes your head clear. but i suggest that you should just study in daytime or when it's warm. a study showed that 60 minutes of study at night is equivalent to 90 minutes in the day.
