The only topical product medically proven and approved by the FDA to regrow hair is Rogaine. They have Rogaine for women.
Being that you are black, you should have better than average regrowth, because according to the studies, people with darker hair achieved better results than those with lighter hair.

You got all very good answers. My sister cut 8 inches off my hair I'd been growing from a very short crop cut for 3 years, leaving me with 3-4 inches of "the flip..." A style I HATED... all 3 months before my wedding... my wedding to man who LOVED my long hair. To his credit, he liked it short, too, but preferred long. Well, it's even longer now. I used braids, cornrows, weaves ... and I do NOT relax my hair. It is down my back. The main thing I did was use these vitamins: VitaStrand by Mikal Clay, "The Hair Doctor." You can buy them online at http://www.vitastrand.com - or check for local stores. If you're not around Chicago just buy online.
Diet plays a big part, too. Try to eat clean, with loads of fruit, veggies, nuts, flaxseed oil and at least 8 glasses of water. Get 8 hours of sleep per night if you can. I can't bring myself to wrap my hair or sleep on a satin pillow, but that would greatly increase your success as well. I ALWAYS wanted long long hair but it would only grow to my shoulder and STOP since after my childhood. The book Good Hair by Lonnice Bronner (The Bronner Brother's Haircare Dynasty's SISTER!!) http://www.amazon.com/Good-Hair-Colored-Considered-Chemicals/dp/0517881519/sr=8-1/qid=1169735881/ref=sr_1_1/102-4601609-4888956?ie=UTF8&s=books is awesome, too. It explains why we had long pigtails as girls and brittle hair as women. So I've changed all that and my hair grows as long as I want it and I am soooooo happy. Feel free to email me (see my profile, click my face) if you want more tips. I know exactly how you feel...I used to feel the same way, girl. Best wishes to you!!

Good/healthy food intake and plenty of moisture to the scalp of head. Tar grease (now they are more odor enduring) worked for me and washing the hair every two weeks while using the Tar grease help my hair grow quickly and healthy. The maintaining part is the hassle for ethnic hair. We tend to over moisturize and over wash the hair. Remember ethnic hair is naturally healthy. Don't let the knots fool you. Kemi oil is good after you reached your desired length with bi-weekly shampoo and deep conditioning you should be ok.

Your hair grows at its own rate. All you can do is eat healthy and take good care of your hair. I wouldn't recommend corn rows, they put too much stress on your hair and could cause it to break off. Use a good shampoo and conditioner and no chemical treatments.

in case you keep braiding your hair it is going to advance out faster. I used to positioned on a weave and below the weave I had my hair cornrowed and then the weave sown into the cornrows. My hair change into see you later after I took it out. the reason being different organic oil continues to be interior the hair and it enables it advance. keep the braiding up and also you've got longer hair. basically be particular you're protecting your scalp greased. wish that permits.

I have heard that cornrows allow the hair to rest and grow. Since you aren't using products the hair stays healthy. While you're getting it cornrowed, why not add some extention hair?
