We have 2 cats. One isn't quite a year old yet and the other is 13 and partially blind from cataracts. The older one has traveled quite a bit--he used to be my mom's cat and rode 25 miles to the vet and rode down from Oregon to Los Angeles. He has lived with us since--2003. the young one hasn't been left longer than a few hours and is still in his 'into everything - destructive' stage. We will be car traveling and our destination is 3 hrs away, staying in a hotel room and they won't be alone in the room more than a couple of hours (closed in the bathroom). The alternative is they stay home with someone to feed and give them fresh water every day. But, she isn't a cat person--one of my friends who is a cat person will visit at least once to check on them but, she lives 30 miles away. I am worried about boarding them because the blind one gets disoriented--he feels safer when he is with us but, he is very familiar with home surroundings. All answers/suggestions welcome!!!

If you are going to be gone for more than 2 days, I would take them with me, if I were you. If you have found a hotel that lets you bring the cats, it should be fine. As far as the travel goes, the younger one will take his stress cues from the older cat and it should be fine. You can probably help things a bit if you can take them out together a few times for some local driving around (no purpose). It doesn't have to be for long. I'm reluctant to leave cats with people who have no cat experience.

How long will you be gone? If it is only 2 or 3 days you can get by with a food dispenser and water dispenser. I keep these on hand becasue we often go out for the weekend. Kittys can hang on their own if there is plenty of food and water for them.

If it will be longer then, I say let the person who not a cat person give them fresh food and water. She doesn't have to touch them. Just refill their food and go. Both kittys will be happier at home without you then traveling in a car and stuck in a bathroom with you.

We have always traveled by car with our cats. You need to have a carrier for moving them to and from the car. We let ours out in the car once we get on the road, but if yours get agitated, you may need to keep them in the carrier. It has been our experience with all our cats, that they tend to be a bit agitated for about the first 15-30 minutes in the car. After that, they find a place to hide and go to sleep until we get to our destination.

Of course, you need to have the litter box available to them while you travel. Carry a container with a lid and fill it with fresh water. During stops, you take the lid off, but they will likely not drink until you get where you are going.

If your cats are not declawed, carry their scratch post if you want to stay friends with whomever you are staying with.

Since we shut the bedroom door at night with the cat inside with us when staying at someone's house, we carry an old sheet and put it under the litter box to catch stray bits of litter that come off the cats' paws when leaving the box so it doesn't get on their carpet.

Plan ahead on finding a hotel that allows pets...not all do.
