They don't know exactly what it means and also for those that do they are aware that it isn't an easy thing to attain. Spiritual enlightenment doesn't come to people in materialist societies without some suffering and personal sacrifice.

Anyone who fears spiritual enlightenment must have some preconceived (and erroneous) notion about what it is. How can someone judge the validity or truth of something that they have never experienced? No more than they can tell you the taste of a food that has never passed through their lips. A guess is the best that anyone who has not experienced it can muster. What if their guess is frightening?
The most common belief is that spiritual enlightenment may lead to some sort of judgment on them or their life choices. This is not the case. Others believe they must behave in a certain way, or believe a certain thing, in order to achieve it. They may think such demands are too great a burden on their soul. However, enlightenment demands nothing from you. This world might have you believe that spiritual enlightenment is difficult to attain. But the truth is it is not as complicated as you think. It seems, also, as if organized religion has a monopoly on its dissemination. I tell you, from personal experience, that none of these ideas is true.
The truth is that spiritual enlightenment is a personal experience; it is simple to understand and religion is not required. That is to say that achieving it does not come from joining a church, repeating certain prayers, or learning certain historical facts.
Spiritual enlightenment is a shift in perception, and is nothing to be afraid of. Spiritual enlightenment is the dissemination of knowledge, and provides you with the ability and capacity to interpret this knowledge. It is knowledge that illuminates rather than obscures. Be wary of those who speak and add to your confusion, those make statements with double meaning and clever witticisms. From confusion, misunderstanding and fear soon follow.

I think many would be afraid of spiritual enlightenment because they would have to look at themselves and judge themselves and find themselves wanting in many ways . God doesnt judge us, we are made to look at our lives on this earth and our thoughts and deeds which are living energy and it affects someone somewhere on this earth and Universe, but we are shown with love and understanding of human weaknesses. We have the choice to atone for them or stay at a lower level of evolvement in the spirit realms until we are ready to atone or put right what we have done on this Earth. Our time here is like a School where we learn lifes lessons so that the soul can progress that bit more. In turn helping mankind to evlove that bit more also.
"we reap what we sow."

There has to be some sacrifice of ones desires, or at least a detachment from them. While that works very well in theory, to put it into practice is hard for most people (I should know, I've tried and failed a few times).
Oftentimes too, it's like skydiving. The first time you venture out you don't know what you're doing, and really you need the help of someone else who has taken that path before, and that's pretty rare. Once they have shown you the way, you can try it for yourself.

I think it's a mistake to assign motivations to people you know nothing about. Why is it that you assign "fear" as a motivation for people not doing...something or other?
You'll have to define your terms before anyone can answer your question with any seriousness. What do you mean by "spiritual enlightenment"?

Because it is supernatural and lots of people who do not understand spirits are afraid of them.
People very often associated spirits with dead people which can be very scary in deed. Little thought is given to the Holy Spirit in comparison.
