Don't tip your ex boss but do tip any servers, wait staff, etc. If you can't for some reason tip them directly give him an envelope with cash in it for them which he can distribute. Should he decide to keep it you nor any of us will ever know. If he refuses accept his decision and send him a good bottle of wine or similar gift as a token of your appreciation. Might be a good idea even if he accepts the tip for his staff.

Well it's quite kind of him ( from my point of view ) to cater an event from you judging from the fact that he is your old boss.
Though you may not be working for him anymore,he still remembers you & offers to cater an event for you.

Though it may be cheap, think about the sincerity and the thought behind it & you will not mind it. Well maybe you could get him a gift or someting,or offer to pay half of the event. After all, he is your ex boss. Good luck! (:

Because he is catering for you, a tip is definitely in order, regardless that he offered and that he is your old boss.

It is still a paying job for him, and you would have (hopefully) tipped another caterer. If he does not want the tip, he will let you know at the end of the event when you try to tip him appropriately.

Enjoy your event!

Absolutely. And tip based on the price the event would have cost. (You still save money overall and it is the right thing to do).

It wouldn't hurt to tip for exceptional service, but be sure not to interfere with his gift.

I would say not, after all he asked you, but feel free to buy him a small gift to say thank you.
