To test for freshness, place a whole egg in a shallow pan of water. A fresh egg will sink to the bottom and stay there. A week old egg will sink to the bottom, but bob a bit. A 3 week old egg will stand on end and a bad egg will float on the surface.

Put in a pan of water, deeper than the egg. If it floats to the top it's off. Basically. Just found the poem below on the net, which may help you remember:

If not sure you ought-ter,
then place it in water.
If it lies on its side,
then it's fresh; eat with pride.

After three or four days,
at an angle it lays.
But, it still is a treat,
so go on and eat.

Ten days, stands on end,
in your baking 'twill blend.
'Cause it's definitely edible,
in your baking, incredible.

But, if it floats on the surface,
that egg serves no purpose.
'Cause a floater's a stinker!
Out the back door best fling 'er

If it's gone bad it usually is lighter and will float in water.
Place your egg in a container of water ,so if it floats it is surely almost rotten. If it is upright it is good.

put it in a pot of water, if it floats, ditch it. However I have had several eggs that didn't float and they were pretty bad so you might have to break them into something first to check before cooking.

Well, you can look at the expiration date on the carton.

You can also shake it, if it rattles, it's bad.
