An older large dog. Large dogs actually require less room. My rotti just follows me around.
Pit bulls prefer to be inside and don't require a big yard unless you are out there with them. They prefer to go out do business and get back inside.

All dogs are great regardless of the size of your backyard IF you take the dog out regularly for exercise. Most dogs need 30min - 1 hour of exercise. (Actually running, or swimming or play w/ other dogs) to burn off the extra energy.
All dogs bark. Some bigger than others. With training you should be okay. You're dog should have confidence in you as the Alpha and security in it's surroundings - that should curb the barking.
Hounds however are bred to be barkers. They are tracking dogs so you may want to steer clear of hounds.
I'd match your personality with the breed of dog you get instead of the yard. It'll be a better match.
Good Luck

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

Honestly, I find the two to be contradictory. Small dogs, like toys, are good for small backyards. But the smaller they get, the noisier they get, at least in my experience.

Perhaps a mixed breed dog may be your best option. Pedigree are nice but mixed breed don't have many of the problems that a purebred dog does.

A Havanese, they dont need much exercise, they are very quiet unless an intruder comes by, they are lap dogs that dont shed.

Please don't get a dog and stick it out in your back yard. Dogs are social animals and if you don't want one to be a member of your family and live in the house with you you really need to reconsider getting one. Putting a dog outside with minimal socialization is cruel.
