Some drugs can induce an out-of-body experience. Putting someone to sleep (anesthesia) is a relatively complicated procedure (which is why it's a separate medical specialty). In general, there are three things to do, besides maintaining vital signs: a) induce sleep, b) relieve pain and c) relax the muscles. A combination of drugs is used to achieve this and it is possible, in some cases that the patient will describe this as an "out of body" experience.

From a medical standpoint, putting someone to sleep is like keeping him between life and death.

Well, I have had both general anesthesia and conscious sedation (where you just get fentanyl or something similar). I didnt have an out of body experience. General anesthesia was like 1 minute had passed by when it was actuallly 12,and it felt like I was trying to open my eyes in a bowl full of jello.

you just hear the anesthesiologist say count backwards now from100 and i have never gotten past 99 and have had 7 surgeries. then you wake up and you dont know if an hour, a day, a week, or a month has gone by. i know that when i wake up i have never remembered anything of when i was "under" thats the best way i know how to describe it.. hope this helps

This is the best way I can describe it...one minute you're there and awake, the next you're waking up. You don't know if 5 minutes or 5 days has passed.

It doesn't feel like anything, so maybe that's what death is like? They give you some kind of medication with your anesthetic so that you don't remember anything. So no, it doesn't (or didn't for me) feel like an out of body experience.

if they get the dosage right it's like you're there one minute and the next they're telling you it's all over with. it's kinda fun
