My cat jumps on the counter all the time and it is driving me nuts. When I'm making lunch in the morning and dinner at night. He is such a pain. I throw him off every second and he come right back on.

I have the same problem and more often than not, what I have to do is put him in another room and close the door when I'm preparing food.

Besides squirting with water, which I sometimes do too, I have heard that you can train a cat not to get on counters by temporarily putting down something sticky...like double stick tape or the bottom side of adhesive shelf liners. Cats hate walking on it and eventually stop going there. I've never tried that trick though, just heard about it. You would want to be careful that they can't accidently get it stuck on them though. That would be my only concern.

A squirt of cold water should do the trick.
I think the problem lies in the fact that he was allowed to get onto the counter top before so he does not understand why it should be off-limits when you are preparing your meals. When you are not making food on the counter, line in with masking tape (sticky side up).. Pretend to do something so he'd jump up. Let him freak out trying to get the tape off for a few minutes. A few incidences like this and he'd stay off the counter top for good. You could also choose to feed him during the times you are preparing food. He'd be less tempted to jump onto the counter since he's occupied with eating.

We bought an ultrasonic sound barrier. Basically when your cat goes somewhere you don't want them to too, press the button and a high pitched sound goes off. It is not harmful or cruel to the cat but will make him jump off the counter. Do this a couple of times and he will quickly learn to stop jumping up. We used it to keep the cat out of the lounge where we have lather chairs. It worked perfectly and we have had no problems. We purchased this item on ebay. I hope this helps!

you gotta keep on him..telling him no very firmly..if it is a younger cat then you can nip it in the bud early..but if older cat then it might take longer to stop him from doing this..just keep on him..and get a spray bottle and spray his cute butt everytime he jumps up there..he probably thinks its a game or something..my cats will do the same when i go into my closet and jump in my clean close basket..drives me nuts and i think they think its a game but ever since i start really saying no in a firm steady voice they now just look at the basket but never jump in..patience is the key and that is exactly what you need when training your cats...good luck!!!

We used the water bottle method. When the cat was on my table, or counter, it got sprayed in the face. It doesn't take too long to break them of getting on stuff u don't want them to when u use the water bottle and it doesn't hurt them, only their pride is hurt:)

With GREAT DIFFICULTY!!!!! I have got 4 cats, and 3 of them are constantly on the worktop - they sleep ontop of my kitchen cupboards to escape the kids and the dogs!! I have tried gently telling them no. I have also tried the water squirt trick - I ended up with a soggy kitchen and 3 wet cats ONTOP OF MY KITCHEN CUPBOARDS!!!

I have now given up trying to stop them. I just bleach the worktops before i use them to prepare food - my shopping bill has gone up - sooooo much bleach!!

Cats HATE water. Get yourself a squirt gun and when he jumps up, spray him. He will very soon get the idea.
