I don't have one on my foot, but I know several people who do, and honestly, each person has their own pain threshold. Talking to one of them they may say that yes, it was the most painful of their tattoos. But, If i asked another, maybe it wasn't so bad afterall.
Some tattoo artists will give you the option of a "dry run" in which they will take the needles across your skin in that area. If you feel that it isn't completely unbearable, then get the tattoo. If you feel that you may not be able to tolerate it, you will still have to pay a price for the needle that was contaminated. My tattoo artist performed a "dry run" on one of my friends, and she had to pay $25 even though she didn't get the tattoo. All artists are different, so you may want to look into it if you are interested in that option.
Also, some artists offer the option of novacaine cream, which helps dull the discomfort, and there are other creams available for this purpose. Again, you may want to look into it and see if that option is available.
Honestly, most of my tattoos have been relatively the same in the way they "hurt". Some small details on each tattoo were more discomfortable than others, but in all, they were pretty equal. I don't find the sensation all that discomfortable and painful, and I have 5 in sensative places. But then again, as I said before, each person has their on pain threshold.
If you are nervous, have a friend go in with you. Having someone to talk to may help take your mind off of any discomfort you may be experiencing.
Good luck. What are you getting?

Not sure what your style of tat is, but I would recommend you work around your ankle bone to incorporate a circular tat. maybe work that tat down the foot or up the low part of leg. I'm sure the tat on the ankle is going to be more uncomfortable than on your back but all tats need to set off those endorphines. Good Luck let us know!

I have "love" with a heart on my right, and "hate" with a skull/cross bones on my left. It was more painful that my other tattoos (ankle, back of calf, inside forearm, hip, shoulder) except for my wrist which was by far the most uncomfortable...although I obviously don't find them that painful or I wouldn't have so many. My advice... get what you want, regardless of pain. It's over before you know it, and you'll love the way your ink looks when you wear flip flops :)

My sister has one on her ankle - she said it did not hurt that much compared to the one on the small of her back.
I think a lot of pain is because we think something hurts, I went for a "downstairs" piercing the other week and because I was certain it would not hurt I hardly felt anything.
I am sure that if you are brave about it that it will not hurt any more than the other two.

my wife's had a tattoo on her foot on the top and said it hurt more than her others, which she also has one on her back, however the pain was no different to the others just thinner skin on the foot so don't know about over the ankle bone, can imagine would hurt a wee bit over the bone area.

Hiya, I've got a tattoo on my foot, I had it done about a month ago.
It's actually on the top, curving into the instep.
My tattooist told me that this is a more sensitive area than normal, but since it was my first, I can't tell you if that's true. The pain was certainly bearable though - my artist was quite quick luckily and done in about 6 minutes.
I just talked to him lots and kept texting furiously to take my mind off the pain, even texting "ow ow ow ow" at one point! One thing though, since your foot is likely to be resting on the tattooist knee, you can't move it, so you have to be careful not to flinch.
I think the pain was totally worth it, I love my design to bits and it's a great place to get one - you can hide it if you want to, or I like to show mine off sometimes in a nice pair of strappy shoes.
Here is a link to a picture of my tattoo:

also you'll find lots of other peoples designs on that site, people like to post them when they get them done.

Yep i do have a tattoo on my foot, had it done last summer. Didn't hurt as much as i expected it to-was bareable so don't worry about it. I think the foot is a good place cause you can easily hide it and just as easily show it off-hope it doesn't become too common a place to have one though-i chose it to be a bit unusual!

I have tattoos on my toes which is similar to the foot bc of the thickness of the skin. All I can say to you is that it hurt like heck. lol It's only bc there isn't much skin, muscle or fat there so you'll feel it on the bone. Another downfall is that they tend to fade faster bc of the skin being thinner and schluffing off. But I will tell you it's worth it. I love the tattoos that I have on my toes. I have had to get them retouched but I've had them for 5 years before that happened.
