No, it's a free country, and no one requires you to insure your home against your will.

If you have a MORTGAGE, then you've entered into that mortgage agreement of your own free will, and THAT CONTRACT THAT YOU AGREED TO, will require you to insure your home, for hurricane, fire, and likely flood. But you don't HAVE to enter into that agreement if you don't want to! Just don't borrow any money!!

Oh, she's right, there's no such thing as "hurricane" insurance. It's Flood coverage, and Wind coverage. In Florida and Texas, Wind is a seperate peril (cause of loss) on a homeowners policy - in most of the rest of the country, it's built in.

I live in SW Florida, where we took a direct hit from Hurricane Charley in 2004. Insurance rates went through the roof that year, and with the 2005 season, many of our friends were dropped by their insurance agencies because the companies couldn't afford to insure everyone! I haven't been able to locate any info on specific requirements, and I don't think there's any such thing as 'hurricane insurance'. The big thing is flood insurance, especially for those living in coastal areas, low-lying areas, in mobile or manufactured homes, or flood prone areas. This seems to be the biggest beef, since flood protection has generally been optional up to this point. I don't know if banks now require flood insurance to buy a home; I would imagine it still depends on where your home is situated. But the regular HOI would cover basic hurricane damage.

Your mortgage company is the one that requires it but if you own your home outright you don't have to have it. In Florida you have your basic homeowners policy and you need to purchase a separate windstorm policy. if you are on the coast you may also want to consider puchasing flood insurance. These days the cost of a homeowners policy in Florida is through the roof if you can find a company to insure you. Good luck !!
