They start the decompsition process by breaking up the matter in the same way we do when we chew our food.

Am going thru the same dilema here... I AM that wife that wants power tools and equipment as gifts !! : ) Been looking at alot of them and have decided to buy the biggest "stihl" we can get. We had a small little piece of crap a few years back, some odd name, and it was horrible. We will not waste our money on an off brand again. If you do NOT want frustration then be sure to get something big enough. Nothing quite ruins your work day like wanting to accomplish a certain task in the yard only to find out the dog could chew wood up better than the peice of machinery you purchased !! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ! As for sealing ANYTHING in the yard that you OR your pets spend time in, just remember whatever you spray on anything will ultimately end up on YOU, your shoes, in your house. Wood chips are made to break down and since you have wooded property, you will always have a ample supply of NEW chips to make everything look nice. : ) Happy Chipping, : )

Beacause it gives u the idea to say "how many chips does a a wood chipper chuck?" really really fast ten times which makes u smile for tripping over your words which incites you to go to the bottle bank which in turn helps the enviroment. Yet again, all roads lead to dinner!

They dont really. They might shred something up for you and make a product, but in the end a lot of resouces went into making that machine do that for you where you are. Plus the energy you use while running it.

Probably the most enviro method is to just let it lay there and decay.

The smaller the pieces, the more surface area is open to the elements and other factors of decomposition. If you put a whole tree down to be decomposed, and an equally sized tree that has been cut into little pieces and chipped down next to it, the chippings will be gone much quicker than the whole tree.

Because they break the wood into smaller pieces, it decomposes quicker than a large piece would, feeding the nutrients back into the earth quicker.

if you want it to break down and add nutrients to the soil it breaks it up so it degrades faster and breaks down cell walls to provide nutrients to the soil.

If you want to use it as a decrative feature it is better to use recycled products than cutting down a tree to chip it...same principle as other reycling

that is a tricky one,
They chip trees and suchlike so they can be used as compost and not go into land fill,
but they use energy electricity or petrol so they leave a carbon footprint, so not sure
