Just love him. Offer him toys and try to play with him. Make sure to keep calling his name so he learns it. Eventually he'll get used to you and his new surroundings and he'll come out from his "shell". He'll need to be socialized w/ other dogs and animals too. Once he's comfortable with you and confident with you and your home start taking him out more and more. Don't force him, it'll only upset him more.

As for the food - feed him only dry. If you tempt him w/ the wet he may get very used to that only eat when there's wet food. And wet/canned food gets stuck in the teeth and can rot them.

Put the dry food out w/ some hot water. Put it in the microwave. It brings out the aroma and makes it a bit more alluring. Make sure you're feeding him a premium food also. More benefits than a "grocery" brand.

If he doesn't eat in 10-15 minutes pick up the food and try again at the next feeding. When he's hungry he'll eat. It's important to feed him on a schedule instead of letting him free feed because it'll help keep his weight down and it'll help with potty training.

Good Luck

as the dog is small and shy you have to be very gentle and patient ; try different types of food even people food (it can be too hard to resist) but do not persevere just leave it be and try again later. Try also different kinds of toys some cannot resist squeaky baby toys some have a weakness for small toys with wheels or just soft toys. You are trying to win the dog's confidence. Talking very enthusiastically may also be a way to gain the dog's confidence. You could also try grooming with a gentle soft brush and gentle rubbing, scratching and maybe massage. Be patient and observe reactions and follow up with any behaviour that makes the dog happier and more relaxed but at all times observe moderation and do not expect too much too soon; Good luck

Give it time-homecoming should be low key for a few days. This is a major change and extra stuff (like friends coming to see him or kids poking at him) will make it worse. Just let him ease in. If you can, give him a crate to sleep in and "den" in. Easy to reach food and water (little dogs need little bowls) and a ticking clock nearby at night will be good too. If you can, findout what the breeder fed and ask for a towel or a soft toy that was with the litter to give the smell of home as he adjusts. The first week is the worst-it will get better.

If you haven't already try different kinds of dog food tosee what he likes, or try enticing him with some real chicken or beef. Walk away from him after you pyt the food in his dish he might not want to eat in front of anyone, or put the food in a room where he has privacy, even under the bed if he spends alot of time under there, Give him lots of love talk to him alot and tell him that you love him don't yell at him for not eating If nothing works take him to the vet maybe he is sick. Believe it it or not animals understand what you are saying. Give him alot of affection.

Just leave the (dry) food out. When it is hungry, it will eat.

Shyness has nothing to do with it. Daschunds are hard headed and very finicky! Just wait until potty-training!
