I was really interested in a story someone told me. What are/were you experiences like in the armed forces? What were you in(eg. Marines, Darpa, Army, Navy etc..)? And how long were you in it?

I am really interested in joining, but i would just like to hear what other people think about it first. By the way, i live in Australia.

I'm 22/f/married and I'm in the US Air Force. I joined in 2005. My job is to load weapons (bombs, missiles, ammo- basically anything with an explosive and is dangerous) on the F-15 fighter jet and do mechanical and electrical work on the weapons systems. The people are great! We have lots of fun and laugh all the time.

As the 1st person said, yes, there is a lot of BS, but you get that with ANY job! military or civilian... It's just a little different when in the military because you would assume that things would be better organized and such.

The benifits and extra money for things is great. I'm deployed right now in Afghanistan and I'm going to be getting tax free everything and for 4months I'll be getting an extra $3,000. The free medical and dental and money for clothing/uniforms, rent, food, and college is good too. You can live comfortably if you don't splurge too much. (my husband also works too)

THe training is easy. But this is not the life for everyone. But honestly, I think the average person could do it. (except dumb blondes- but some of them get in too)

going into the military you should decide if you want training for a job and get out with a degree (college) and use your degree and military training and get out after 4years to get better pay as a civilian, or stay in as a career. Talk to a recuiter.

I love it in the military...the US military is going to be very different from any other country. I don't know if that is a good or bad thing. But the general ideas are the same.

I served in the US Marines and the US Navy Reserves. I met several Aussie soldiers in Iraq and you should be proud to serve with them.

I would recommend getting a job for about 2-3 years before joining the military that way you can see that there is as much BS in the civilian corporate world as the military. In a civilian job you have to beg for a raise in pay and you will be told "we just don't have the money in the budget at this time". For some reason kids that join out of high school don't realize they will not be treated like kids anymore. They are not coddled by mom and dad, they will be expected to act like adults and will be treated as such.

I had a good experience in the military and recommend it to anyone that needs a little direction in their life.

So you want info on the Austrailian military then? I only have info on the U.S. military. Honestly, the U.S. military is so different in comparison to the rest of the world. Anyway, I think that the military is pretty much a bunch of BS compensated by good college loans and decent bonuses. The U.S. military pays for all college while in service, and usually 28k after service. The training wasn't hard, and the job isn't hard. The only thing that really makes it not worth it in the U.S. military is the amount of BS you have to put up with. My recommendation is if you can just finish college and get a job. The military is a waste of time, at least the U.S. military.
