Because English is the international language of business and commerce. Furthermore communication associated with international air travel is done in English. Despite what Socialists and Communists might say or think business and not welfare is what makes the world go round.
I was in Japan 1970. While I am certain it was going on well before I got there, I found it was nearly impossible to learn any Japanese at all. Everyone I encountered insisted on speaking English. They were starved for someone to talk to who thought in English. When they determined I was one of those people, they refused to forgo the opportunity to practice. It was great fun but I wish I could have learned a few words in Japanese.

The fact that English is so wodespread is due to the colonializing of the Brittish Empire. Unable and unwilling to learn and use indigineous languages, the Brittish Colonials taught and spread their own language and many of the people that were colonized adopted English to be able to effectively deal with an often oppressive foreign presence. In actuality, more people speak Chinese and/or Indonesian than speak English.
