You are completely correct. Write 'Not known at this address' and pop it back in the post, and then Royal Mail will sort getting it sent back to the sender. I had this problem at my flat, the chap from whom I bought it had gone home to Spain and clearly didn't bother to inform any of the companies he had had dealings with (banks, utilities etc). So, when I sent his post back I also added in red 'please amend your records' and it seems to have worked, I get virtually no post that is not for me.
*note* - to those who have suggested you destroy them or open them, you really shouldn't - I doubt anyone would find out, but I believe it is an offence to interfere with post that is not addressed to you.

1. It's an offense to 'tamper' with someone elses mail
2. If you can catch the/a postperson then give it to her/him
3. You could try writing 'return to sender' if that's shown on the outside or on the back of the envelope.
4. If not then 'not known at this address'
5. If after 13 years you still get someone else's mail, Bin the buggars !!!

Contact your royal mail sorting office and tell them. I take it you do not get the same postie everyday otherwise he would have known by now that you are receiving mail meant for other people and would have rectified the matter for you.
If it continues bundle the mail all up and hand back to the posite of just put it back in the mail box. After 3 months and still continuing file 13 for recycling.
Alternatively use the letters to rest your mug of coffee on while you eat your brekky.

I tear them up and put in bin. If they can't be bothered giving people their forwarding address then they don't deserve to receive the mail. Getting mail for people who moved from my house 15 years ago!

You are doing the right thing. I've moved often and always do that. The previous occupiers mail soon stops coming. It's immoral and illegal to open mail addressed to other people.

I have always put "return to sender" on the letter, "or not known at this address". and put it in to the post box... and the letters haven't came back...... So I'm gathering that it is true.

You are right, i have put 'Not at this address' before, if on the envelopes it has a return address you could put 'return to sender, not at this address'

Errr what am I reading! Open them! Be nosy its fun! Then if you keep getting annoyed by the same letters get in touch with who the sender. If you do want to put them back in the post write "No longer at this address" so they know they have moved.

That might work, or just take all the mail to the post office and talk to someone face-to-face so there's no confusion.
