5. Those who fail to bear "good fruit" will be "hewn down, and cast into the fire." 7:19

"Atheists, why attack Old Testament verses IF.........? ...we no longer follow that?" If you believe in the bible, then you have to believe the whole thing. you don't get to pick and choose. "Isn't this a strawman argument?" No - a strawman argument is claiming that because bananas fit into your hand, that they must have been designed to fit in your hand. "Before you critique, you need to properly understand the Bible." Ah yes - you have to 'understand' the bible before you are allowed to critique it! "There are a couple things which made verses like the death penalty morally justified for working on the sabbath AT THAT TIME" Of course - you can justify the death penalty for working on the sabbath AT THAT TIME, because it happened, and requires justification.: "1) We no longer do it." Hell, you don't even use the same sabbath day... "2) It ONLY applied to a certain group of people" Ones working on the sabbath? "3) God told Moses to do this" That's arguable. "4) Dying is not the worst thing that can happen" Arguable as well - although true in some cases (i.e. severe injuries) "5) The people knew the consequences BEFORE they did it." Not that ignorance of the law would have changed anything. "6) Different times call for different measures." Yeah.. Right. "Is it fair to call the sabbtah law immoral once you examine these facts?" Plenty fair. "Even if you don't believe in God there was a moral justification for it" Made by people who base their morals on a belief in a God who wants people killed for working on the sabbath. "plus even IF it was bad" What do you mean 'if'? "(and I am NOT saying it is, I am playing devil's advocate)" As opposed to justifying it. "WE NO LONGER DO IT so it is illogical to attack the morality of the Bible by bringing this up." Ah yes - but it was done, has no moral justification in reality (god told me to do it isn't actually considered justification - try killing someone and then pleading that in court sometime). Your people might not do it anymore, but you still advocate for belief in the bible - the whole bible, and justification for immoral acts both on the part of 'god' and the part of 'his' followers. 'Christian' apologists will never find any wrongdoing in the bible - 'it's not wrong when god does it - or tells someone to do it'.

The new testament encourages slavery.

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)

Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them. (1 Timothy 6:1-2 NLT)

The servant will be severely punished, for though he knew his duty, he refused to do it. "But people who are not aware that they are doing wrong will be punished only lightly. Much is required from those to whom much is given, and much more is required from those to whom much more is given." (Luke 12:47-48 NLT)

No my friend, you do not understand the Word of God because the Holy Spirit is not in you.

"The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned." - 1 Corinthians 2:14
