I was reading an article about Islam and it says that muslim girls have 2 wear "hijab" which means to cover their hair and their body so men can't see them. I want 2 know other people's opinions on Hijab please, and what they think about it.

I am a Muslim woman.
I think hijab protects me.
I voluntarily cover my hair and wear long sleeves.
My husband does not force me to wear hijab.
In fact, I chose to do so before marriage and have continued to do so.
I even go to work dressed modestly and believe me people respect me for my choice.
I am happy to be a "covered up", not oppressed, educated Muslim woman. I am also pleased with what my Lord has ordained.

Its a part of the religion-some take it on some don't. Islam also asks for men to cover from their chest to just by the knee too-this is to do with 'lust' (sorry the actual scripts on this are too long to type here....).

The Hijab or whatever a women chooses to use to cover herself up is just that-a cover up of her body shape. It's no biggie to the women doing it but it seems its a biggie to those who don't practice this or know much about it. Muslim woman can wear what they can infront of their husbands, brothers, fathers...yadda yadda yadda the covering up is just for when you go out. Sometimes this is a good thing in my opinion (like when you don't have time to do your hair properly).
The whole concept of a woman must cover her face is questionable-some Muslim scholars say you must cover your face some say just the main body and hair.

If a woman doesn't want to wear it then I think that's a pesonal preference-it should not be down to a man to tell her what to do. Why? Because if a Muslim reads into the basics of Islam they'd see that if a Muslim does something wrong (e.g. theft, sex out of wedlock etc) then the issue is not between that person and the law of the country its between that person and God.

1stly yes it is an obligation 2 wear a hijab. To show only the face and the hands- this has to be done infront of non mahrams (people who she is legally allowed 2 marry), but at home she doesnt have to. This protects the honor of the woman and helps men keep their gazes away from women. In surah noor it says in the quran for believing women to draw their veils over their heads and bossoms. So no matter what the 'modern' muslims say - it is an obligation and has many benefits.
For example if a woman wearing hijab is on a bus and a woman dressing up and wearing a low cut top etc... is also there, a man would more likely pay attention 2 the uncovered woman and harass her!

Basically, Hijab means screen, to place a screen between men's lustful eyes and the beauty of women. The reason the women are covered is that they might incite men's earthly passions given the women's beauty and cause men to sin in their hearts. Moreover, a woman would cover to keep safe her family 's or husband's honor. A woman's beauty is not for all to scrutinize. An uncovered woman shames her family as she would be considered raised in a family that has little respect and honor and if everybody had a look at this woman's flesh, what's there left for her husband to see?

I'm not Muslim but my understanding is that customs vary in different places and different flavors of Islam. In Saudi Arabia women cannot show their face at all and can be beaten by men if they're not "properly" covered. Not all Muslims are that extreme.

You ask what I think about it? From an American point of view forcing women to cover their faces is degrading and insulting to women.

The Christian religion used to have requirements for covering the head, too. It's funny that some seem to think it's a big deal when the custom is associated with another religion.

I think its one thing to cover your head.but its another to have to cover from head to toe and your face. in some religions today there are women who will wear a headscarf when going to church or monasteries.but that Afghan thing with the blue cover that barely lets them breath is torture.

I have heard a lot of Arabian women speak out for reform but are not allowed to do anything! It is sad as I continue to see that all this crazy business is just being used for the pure control of things and people.very very sad!

It seems odd to me, yes. But I know very little about Islam and Muslims. It's a totally foreign culture to me but that doesn't make it wrong.

Let the girls decide entirely for themselves. Some of them want to wear it, some of them don't. None should be forced to use it, and none should have to take it off because it is banned (i.e. in french schools). Banning doesn't solve anything.
